Your 'core' refers to the area around your lumbar spine, abdomen and hips. Making this strong will make daily activities seem easier as well as supplying the stability required for sports. There are a range of exercises that can be done from sit-ups to using the Swiss ball. Core stability is a key focus for many physiotherapy and personal training programmes and may also be known as Pilates or Clinical Pilates.
This is a type of strength training that involves the use of ropes and webbing to enable you to work against your own bodyweight. It develops core muscle strength as well as joint and muscular stability. It can be done on TRX or Z trainer equipment, both of which give excellent results. Suspension training can be used indoors or outdoors and adds real variety to a training programme either in individual or group sessions.
This is a martial arts approach to training. It is suitable for a wide range of fitness levels and abilities and improves your cardiovascular fitness, your muscular strength and your motor skills. As well as all those, it is a great way to combat stress! Pad work is one of the most popular and enjoyable activities and can be used in an individual programme or as part of a circuit in my Boot Camp style sessions. Give it a try!
Kettlebell training builds strength and endurance, particular in the lower back, legs and shoulders. It involves weights that resemble cannon balls with handles and doing a large number of repetitions to work multiple muscle groups simultaneously. The amount of calories you can burn in a 20 minute session can be equivalent to doing 6 minute miles, as proven in a study done by ACE. Kettlebells can really add to your training programme and are used in Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation and as part of a personal training programme.
When living in our lovely rural environment, outdoor exercise can be the best way to train. We have a range of equipment in the outdoor area of the clinic for strength training as well as plenty of space to work on your cardio-vascular fitness. In addition, I can offer walking, running and cycling and mountain biking as part of your training.
To enhance sport performance and assist in injury prevention. We are able to offer a Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and a corrective exercise programme. Mary is a certified FMS practitioner. This is widely used in professional sport and athletics but is also useful for those of us who train or participate in sport at any level, especially if you keep picking up niggling injuries. Pain and discomfort can disrupt how you move during day-to-day activities and can be the catalyst to seeking physiotherapy. Assessing different functional movements is an important part of targeting any issues. We believe it is important to look at the global interplay between joints and muscles in the body because whether it is participating in a sports match or completing tasks at home, the body needs to work from a stable and controlled base before we focus on strength and power.
We are able to screen your movement patterns to ensure we are not only addressing your primary complaint but also any predisposing causes to your discomfort. Adapting how you move can provide long-term pain relief by reducing the negative stress through joints and make you move more efficiently. So whether you have picked up niggling injuries with your sport, are not at your best following an operation or just want to reduce the risk of picking up an injury in the future, screening could assist you in achieving your goals.
